A confirmed spinster at nine and twenty, Memory Bane has never been told she is “too young.” But that’s exactly what Ethan Martens says when she arrives at his house for a new job. This unreasonable man wants to send her home immediately, but when a terrible snowstorm prevents her departure, Memory sees a chance to prove herself – and prove him wrong.  

Yet just as she hopes to change his mind, Ethan changes hers, too. As the storm rages on, Memory glimpses a softer, irresistibly attractive side of her would-be employer. She finds herself wanting to stay for more than just a job.   

But the servants’ gossip gives her pause. Young women tend to disappear from this house, under mysterious circumstances. The cook says it’s fairies. The butler says ghosts. When Ethan’s cold mood returns out of the blue, Memory can’t help but wonder if they’ve all got it wrong.
